The Different Form Factors of SSDs
There are three main form factors of SSDs: 2.5-inch, M.2, and mSATA.
The 2.5-inch form factor is the most commonly seen SSD form factor because it is compatible with the majority of laptops. It is the same form factor as a traditional hard drive, except it is much thinner and lighter. It is also easier to install and is more reliable than a traditional hard drive.
The M.2 form factor is the smallest form factor for SSDs. It is not as widely used as the 2.5-inch form factor, but it is becoming more popular due to its small size and compatibility with laptops that have limited space. It is typically used in thin and light laptops, Ultrabooks, and tablets.
The mSATA form factor is the oldest type of SSD form factor. It was popular in the early days of laptop computing, but it is now rarely used due to its limited size and lack of compatibility with modern laptops.
Advantages and Disadvantages of SSD Form Factors
Each form factor of SSD has its own advantages and disadvantages. The 2.5-inch form factor is the most reliable and compatible form factor, but it is not as fast compared to the other form factors. The M.2 form factor is the most popular and fastest form factor, but it is not compatible with all laptops and is more expensive. The mSATA form factor is rarely used due to its limited size and compatibility issues, but it is the cheapest form factor.
